The Rookery, Streatham

Today I took my camera for a walk to Streatham Common, I walked up the side of the Common and at top there are some Gardens known as The Rookery.  Many years ago this was part of the Streatham Spa and the gardens were part of the grounds of a house called The Rookery.   When the Spa declined local residents campaigned to keep the gardens and they were formally opened as a public garden in 1913.

Personally I don't remember of any of that but I do remember as a child playing there with my brother and cousins.  It was always the place to go during those hot, dry summers.  We used to send leaves down from the top of the waterfalls and watch them float through all the small falls and steams.  It was also a great place for hide and seek.
There were a couple of things I noticed that were different, the drinking fountain is there but not working, it is probably a health and safety issue!   Also the huge plants that looked like giant rhubarb were missing but they probably out grew the space.

It was certainly very peaceful today and the little cafe outside the gardens looks worth a visit for the next time.

I took quite a few pictures that are now on the flickr photostream. http://www.flickr.com/photos/58563435@N02/sets/72157626509890878/
