Environmental Fair - 2011

Today is the Environmental Fair at Carshalton Park.

This Fair is quite large and has music, food, plants, charities, therapies and lots, lots more.

I saw a couple of friends, bought some herbs and chillies, a very tasty falafel wrap and not only that the sun shone the whole time I was there.

London Transport Museum

Yesterday I was going to go out into the country with a friend of mine, but as the weather was pretty rubbish we decided to go to the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
It is many years since I have been there and the museum itself was closed for a number of years for refurbishment.  Going to the museum during the school holidays is probably not one of my better moves but we had to think of somewhere uncover as the rain was really heavy.
The museum is very interesting and follows the history of the London Transport.  As usual I took loads of photographs and have put some of them on flickr.

The ticket to the museum allows me to revisit during the next 12 months, so I think I will be back.

ARC Gloria in London

I went up to London today to see the ARC Gloria, the Colombian Navy's three-masted training ship.  The ship has returned to London after 18 years as part of its 2011 international tour.  Commanded by Captain Gabriel Pérez, the Armada República de Colombia (ARC) “Gloria” is the official flagship and sail-training ship of the Colombian Navy. The ship is on a goodwill tour of the world and the ship left its home port of Cartagena, Colombia, on 13 May and has since visited ports in the United States, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Holland. It has a crew of 163, including 81 final-year cadets from the Colombian Naval Academy and “Argos”,the ship’s navy-trained Labrador.

The ship is moored in South Quay, West India Docks, London, near to the South Quay DLR station.  The ship arrived on Tuesday 23 August and will depart on Friday 26 August for it's onward trip to Spain, Morocco and Caribbean before heading home to Colombia.

Arundel

Today Val and I went out for the day to Arundel.  Neither of us had been there for sometime so we thought we would have a potter around the and lunch.  We did not go to the Castle on this occasion.

We popped into lots of the lovely little shops but managed to buy nothing!   We then found a very pleasant restaurant called Farids Kitchen http://faridskitchen.com/ .  Val had the Plat de Jour which was a Normandy Gallette followed by a Creme Brulee.  I had a huge bowel of Moules and Frites, they were wonderful and I still had room for Tarte Tatin.   Great lunch!
The day itself was really relaxing but we could have done with some slightly warmer weather, especially as it is the middle of August.

London Surrey Cycle Race

Today was the London Surrey Cycle Race, Olympic Test Event.  The race started and finished in London and came out to Surrey.  Having checked on the timings and found it passed by Hampton Court twice, on the way out to Surrey and on the way back.

So I popped down to Hampton Court to see the cyclists on the way out.

Then found a seat, chatted to a another spectator over lunch and waited for the cyclists to come back.
It was a great morning and a really good atmosphere.

Burghley - Sculpture Garden

This is the second post about the visit to Burghley.  After our visit to the Garden of Surprises and lunch, of course, we went into the Sculpture Garden.  Some of the Sculptures were pretty amazing.

Burghley - Garden of Surprises

This is the first of 2 posts on a visit to Burghley, this took place while I was visiting my cousin in Northampton.  We didn't go into the house but to the Garden of Surprises and the sculpture garden.
As the Garden of Surprises is full of water features there is a warning to the parents about children that may not be feeling to well ......
While were in the garden we had a game of Merrelles which is like Nines Mens Morris, but it is a slightly different game and also as I have not played it for years and years I go thrashed!
There was loads to see in the gardens and plenty of opportunity to get wet including the exit.

Out and about - Northamptonshire

I know I am a bit late updating this blog but there has been a lot going on.  Here are some of the places I went to during my weekend away in Northamptonshire.   Firstly, I stayed in a place called Stanwick, a very pretty village with a friendly community.

During the weekend we went to the Triangular Lodge, Rushton, which is basically a triangular lodge.  The building, rooms and some of the windows are all triangular in shape.
We then went off to Lyddington to see the church and the Bede House.

There is a lovely stained glass window in the church but also above an inside door there is a glass engraved view of the church.

It was then time to have our picnic so it was off to at Rutland water.  The church at Rutland looks quite amazing and there was also a boat race.
Finally we called in on Uppingham another picturesque town.
